Personal Review

Personal Review

In the past I have not been one of Steinbeck’s largest fans. However, The Grapes of Wrath had a different effect on me; I was eventually drawn into the novel and can now say that my opinion of the writer has changed. In middle school I read Steinbeck’s, The Pearl, the book was much shorter than The Grapes of Wrath and less of an exciting novel.

When reading The Grapes of Wrath I enjoyed Steinbeck’s ability to hold intrigue throughout the novel. The novel was written such that many events occurred. It seemed as if the Joad family was always facing new adversity, this drama causes the reader to feel a sensation that makes it nearly impossible for them to put the book down. While reading I always wanted to know what happened next. The downfall to the many intense and intriguing situations was a run-on chain of events. When there is constantly a hardship taking place, and not only a small one such as not enough water, but a large obstacle, it is difficult for me to relate to the text. Relating to the text is very important for readers because it gives them the opportunity to comprehend the true feelings of the characters. Possible the author wanted that element of unknowing and sympathy for his characters, however, personally I felt that some occurrences became too wordy and over-drawn.

John Steinbeck’s, The Grapes of Wrath, is a novel that stands out because of the time it depicts. The Great Depression is a sore time in American history, and many people hope not to write about it, as one who enjoys writing, that would be my guess. The novel definitely had its positives and negatives for me; however, I respect Steinbeck for choosing the time period he did.

  1. I agree with your opinion that some ideas were quite verbose and over drawn. But I thought that the long sentences and the short setneces were somewhat balanced.

  2. I respect Steinbeck as well because he chose this time period. He wrote the book in 1939 which is before the Great Depression even ended. The Great Depression probably seemed like it was going to go on forever because of how long it was, and it must have been hard to stay hopeful. There are some hopeful parts in the novel, and I think that Steinbeck was keeping his audience in mind when he wrote this book. This is the only book I have read that depicts the Great Depression, and probably the most popular, and I am glad that people don't just forget about the hard times in our past. Also, as we learned in history, most books and movies of the Great Depression were made as escapist movies, to get the audience to forget about their tough lives. I appreciate that Steinbeck was able to look the hard times in the face and write a powerful book.

  3. I think the short sentences balanced the run- on sentences. Now after further analyzing the book I feel that these run- on descriptive sentences did not really take away, but had the reader further interested in the continuance of the subject. He didn't exactly repeat the same idea in different words over and over, but repeated a phrase to add emphasis and evoke passion. I also believe that element of unknowing and attempt to make the reader feel for his characters was to leave the imagination always wondering as the future cannot be definite and therefore inconclusive.Like the dust that hung in the air, the possibilites are there in the air.
